The world is highly ignorant about the field of coloproctology and hence there is a social taboo attached to this field in the general populace and surprisingly even among the surgeons and other clinicians. This in turn has lead to the proliferation of so-called & self-declared doctors or quakes who exhort to arbitrary and often irrational treatments for these problems. The indifference of teaching faculties and the surgical students alike has created a very odd situation where there is a dearth of people trained in this faculty as experts and hence this growing menace of “quakery” in spite of the high prevalence ( almost 50% ) of these diseases worldwide. This menace has grown to such an extent that people are often found treating cancer’s as simple piles. A few such incidents which happened to some very close friends is what got 2 colorectal surgeons to think differently and this heralded the formation of “Smiles Gastroenterology”.
